The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) is a transformative initiative by the Government of India aimed at increasing the use of solar energy in the agricultural sector. With a focus on reducing farmers’ dependency on diesel and grid power, the scheme offers financial assistance and substantial subsidies for solar installations across three components.
Australian Premium Solar (India) Ltd. has successfully completed over 5,500 solar water pump installations across agricultural sectors in Gujarat, Tripura, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and several other states.
With a highly experienced team and all the necessary government approvals for products and subsidies, we ensure farmers can upgrade their irrigation systems and improve their livelihoods without any hassle.
Understanding the Three Components of PM-KUSUM
Component A: Grid-Connected Renewable Energy Plants
- Objective: To promote the installation of small-scale solar power plants (up to 2 MW capacity) on barren or unused farmland.
- Eligibility: Individual farmers, farmer producer organizations (FPOs), cooperatives, and panchayats.
- Benefit: Farmers can generate income by selling surplus power to the grid under a long-term agreement (typically 25 years).
Component B: Standalone Solar Pumps
- Objective: To install off-grid solar water pumps for irrigation in areas where grid supply is unreliable or unavailable.
- Eligibility: Individual farmers, particularly those dependent on diesel-powered pumps.
- Subsidy Breakdown:
- 30% subsidy from the Central Government
- 30% subsidy from the State Government
- The farmer pays the remaining 40%, which can be further reduced through bank financing (often only 10% upfront)
Note: Subsidy is applicable for pumps up to 7.5 HP. Higher-capacity pumps can be installed, but the subsidy remains capped.
Component C: Solarisation of Grid-Connected Pumps
- Objective: To solarise existing grid-connected agricultural pumps, allowing farmers to use solar energy for irrigation and export surplus power to the grid.
- Eligibility: Farmers who already own grid-connected pumps.
- Benefit: Significant reduction in electricity bills, with the added advantage of earning income from unused power generation.
Key Benefits of PM-KUSUM Scheme
- Reduces dependency on diesel and grid electricity
- Encourages income generation through energy export
- Minimises irrigation costs in the long term
- Supports sustainable and eco-friendly agriculture
- Offers up to 60% subsidy (central and state combined)
- Promotes energy independence for rural India
Who Can Apply?
- Individual farmers with cultivable land
- Farmer groups, cooperatives, FPOs, and panchayats
- Applicants with clear land title and access to water
- Priority is given to small and marginal farmers
How to Apply
Interested beneficiaries can apply through their State Renewable Energy Development Agencies (SREDAs) or electricity distribution company (DISCOM) portals. Some states have dedicated online application systems for PM-KUSUM.
